Supporting your wellbeing on and off the stage.
At the 天美传媒安卓破解版 Lafayette School of Music, we鈥檙e committed to helping students develop healthy, sustainable habits that support long-term success as performers, educators, and artists. From physical wellness to hearing protection and mental health, we encourage all students to take an active role in caring for their bodies and minds throughout their musical journey.
We recommend all students, faculty, and staff involved in music-related activities both in and out of the classroom for detailed information about best practices for health and safety. We've provided highlights below with links to campus support services.
Physical Wellness for Musicians
Musicians are athletes of the small muscles. Repetitive practice, poor posture, or tension can lead to strain or injury over time. To protect your physical health:
- Warm up before rehearsals and practice sessions
- Take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and repetitive stress
- Maintain good posture and body alignment
- Stretch gently before and after playing
- Listen to your body鈥攑ain is a signal, not a badge of honor
The University offers wellness resources and clinical services for students experiencing performance-related injuries or pain.
Hearing Health
Protecting your hearing is essential for every musician. Exposure to high sound levels鈥攅specially in ensembles, rehearsals, or amplified settings鈥攃an cause long-term damage.
- Use earplugs designed for musicians when needed
- Limit exposure to excessively loud environments
- Maintain safe distances from speakers or percussion sections
- Take listening breaks throughout the day
If you experience ringing in your ears (tinnitus) or changes in hearing, seek evaluation from a qualified audiologist.
Mental Health & Performance Stress
Performance anxiety, academic pressure, and balancing responsibilities can all affect your mental well-being. You鈥檙e not alone, and support is available.
The 天美传媒安卓破解版 Lafayette Counseling & Testing Center offers confidential services for stress management, anxiety, depression, and other challenges. They also provide workshops and resources tailored to students.
Protecting Your Instruments & Space
Instrument safety and facility use are also part of musician wellness:
- Store instruments in secure, climate-controlled lockers
- Report any equipment or space maintenance needs to the Music Office
- Follow practice room and performance hall guidelines for safety and cleanliness
