Requirements
You have a lot of flexibility in choosing the specifics of the work you'll do for an Honors Contract. We want you to be able to do something that will spark your passion and progress your academic goals!
However, your project must work to meet at least three of the Honors Program Student Learning Outcomes. You'll be asked to identify and explain how you plan to meet your chosen SLOs in your proposal.
Honors Program Student Learning Outcomes:
Critical and Creative Inquiry | students will demonstrate the ability to explore, question, and generate new ideas through critical analysis and creative expression across disciplines |
Effective and Ethical Communication | students will communicate ideas clearly, responsibly, and persuasively in diverse contexts and formats, engaging with others through substantive and respectful discourse |
Integrative and Applied Learning | students will integrate knowledge and skills from multiple contexts and experiences to address complex, real-world problems in personally meaningful ways |
Self and Community Awareness | students will demonstrate awareness of their own positionality, values, and growth while appreciating and valuing diverse perspectives |
Joyful and Purposeful Engagement | students will identify and pursue areas of study, practice, and collaboration that bring them a sense of purpose, guided by their values |
Leadership Through Integrity and Initiative | students will take informed action in service of their communities and disciplines, demonstrating integrity, initiative, and adaptability |
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1
Choose a potential course to use for an Honors Contract
It is a good idea to attend the course a couple of times before deciding
- Consider the syllabus: Do you think you can handle additional Honors assignments on top of the other coursework?
- Get a feel for the professor or instructor: Do they seem like someone you'd like to work closely with for a semester?
Step 2
Brainstorm ideas for your Honors Contract
Remember that you'll be working with the professor to make a plan, so try to keep an open mind. You'll want to have some ideas to work with before meeting with your professor though!
- You can use the examples provided here or contact the Honors Staff if you're feeling stuck!
- Browse Examples of Honors Contracts by Course
Step 3
Ask your professor or instructor if they'd be willing to supervise a Contract in their course
- We suggest scheduling a synchronous meeting to discuss the specifics of your contract ideas and goals.
Step 4
Submit the Honors Contract Proposal
You can find the form on the Honors Moodle Page or linked below:
- Request an Honors Contract
- Your Contract will have to be approved by your professor and the Honors Program. You'll receive an email every step of the way!
Step 5
Make sure to complete your contracted assignments or projects before the due date
You can find the due dates each semester on the Honors Moodle Page
- Please note that the Contract Completion forms are due a couple of weeks before the end of the semester, so make sure the project you're doing for your Contract is not tied to the final in the course!
Step 6
Submit your Contract Completion Form and Contract Reflection to the Honors Program
- The reflection will ask you to write about any insight you gained from the contract. You'll also have to determine whether or not you met the SLOs you identified in your submission.
- The content of your reflection will not affect your grade, so please be honest!
